Default Lowering the front end

I bought my wife a new 09FXd but it needs lowered for her..

Is it better to lower just the back end an inch or both the front and back?

How difficult is it to lower the front end?

Ride safe....

You can lower the rear an 1" or an 1.5", and not the front, without any major adverse effects. It would be best to also lower the front the maintain the intended geometry.

The easiest and cheapest way to lower the front is to slide the tubes up higher in the triple trees. You can get about an inch lower this way. Some think this creates an awkward look with the tubes protruding that high in the trees.

Another inexpensive alternative is Progressive new drop-in springs. Cost just over a hundred bucks and make for a pretty easy install.

the fxd has 12 5/8" shocks. to go down 1" best to go with a 12" shock. To go down further I would recommend a 11.6" shock... 11.6" shocks from works performance would be best in this situation so she could maintain comfort and not end up with a bike that rides like a school bus. They make their shocks for each individual rider and their weight and riding style. For the front the progressive drop in kit is nice and easy. Be aware that the front will be more stiff than current front end. You want to figure her weight into the equasion. If she is a light weight woman, she may be very unhappy with the stiffer front end and if you buy cheap shocks stiffer rear end too. A stiff low shock like the progressives may send her bouncing off the bike with too much rebound and too firm of a spring. Unless she is a heavier rider, you want to steer away from a burly kit or progressive rear suspension, unless ya'll just don't give a crap about comfort and ride quality.
