Default 5,000 mile service- Can a rookie do it?

What do you guys think about a rookie buying a manual and doing the 5,000 mile service. I'm fine with changing the fluids, I'm just concerned about the adjustments . I hate to pay $300+ when I could do it myself. BTW I eventually want to learn to do it myself anyway. Really how much adjusting is a 5 month old bob going to require. Any advice would be appreciated. Besides if I screw something up there are lot's of experts here to walk me through it.

It's mostly inspections and bolt tightening. Piece o' cake. Do it, you won't regret it. My bike's never been to the Harley shop after 10K miles. The basic maintenance is not difficult. Best of luck.

Buy the service manual and do the work your self. It is almost a repeat of the 1000mi service. The manual will walk you right through it step by step. Save all of the receipts and document the work. I did my own service and even took a couple of photos of the work in progress to go with the receipts. I am not a super mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, and if I can do it anyone can.

good luck with it

Gentlemen,
Thanks for the words of encouragment. I'm not sure if others notice this at the dealer, but where I bought my "BOB" the service dept. consists of 20 year old guys driving beat up crotch rockets and working on sea doo's. This makes me wonder about how much care and time they put in to maintenance of the "new" harley's.

Can and should do it yourself. Buy the manual and you'll not only save a bundle by doing it yourself and on your future servicing.
