I really like the wear I am getting out of my 09 Ultra, 14 - 15 k miles before needing change. Wondering if I can fit a 180 on the rear of the FXDC without modding and spacers.
HD sells a specific tire (was made by Dunlop, assume it still is) made to fit a 180 on the stock dyna rear wheel. Most other 180's won't fit that rim. They sell it as a "dyna wide tire kit". It includes the tire and some brackets to secure the wires behind the fender so they don't get rubbed by the wider tire. Many of us, including me, just have the tire and didn't get the "kit". As long as you wires are secure and out of the way, you don't need the kit. However, many dealers will not sell the tire without the kit. I had my indy order and install the tire for me without the kit. Over a year now with no issues. With all that said, based on feedback here on the forum, the 180 dunlop tire does not last as long as the stock tires. Maybe around 6 or 7 thousand miles compared to around 10k on the stock tire. My stock tire only last me around 7k miles. So, I don't know how long I can make the 180 last. A little over 3k on it now and still looking good.
I went with the Pirelli Night dragon 180 series with no problems. The tire seems to me a lot better than the dunlop. The grip is better and after 3000 miles the tire still has plenty of thread left. With the dunlop after 3000 mile I would have to measure the thread depth frequently.
Not just any 180 will fit. You have two choices. SE GT502 180/60-17 or the Pirelli Night Dragon 180/60-17. Most other 180s are designed for a wider rim (~5.5" wide). The two mentioned will fit on the stock 4.5" rim.
