Default black smoke at start up. :(

Took a 320 mile road trip yesterday. My first long trip ever on a bike. Had a blast.

But, I let a friend sit on my bike and he started it up with out waiting for the little light to go off. I noticed Black smoke come out the pipes. And then i noticed the same thing happening Through out the day. Whenever i would start it up. It would clear up very quickly. Hope its nothing serious.

Oh and another thing i dont know if its been smoking and i just never noticed it.

I just hit the 1000 mile mark and need to bring it in for service .. Im heading out now. To see if its gonna do it this morning.

Black smoke is an indication of a rich fuel mixture.

I was thinking the rich fuel mixture as well. Just checked it again this morning. Still does it...

The ECM richens the mixture on startup, just as the manual choke does on carbed bikes. Should clear up shortly after. You may also notice a slight puff of black smoke while you're cruising and suddenly crack the throttle wide open. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Means you really have to open it up to blow out the carbon.
