Default Friend rides my FXDBI wants new bike

A friend of mine let me ride his 83 Honda so I could get used to riding a heavier bike on pavement, traffic, etc. before getting my Bob. I told him I would let him ride my Harley when I got it, since he loaned me his bike. Well, yesterday he took off on my bike for the first time and when he pulled back into his driveway he said, "Is the Harley place open tomorrow?" He also said, "That thing rides good as sh*t." Sh*t being a popular noun to use in similes in eastern NC. Question is, especially for you more seasoned riders, since my friend isn't actually going to buy a new Harley, what do you think would be a good dependable bike for about $3,000. I've noticed a lot of you guys still have your 80's and 90's model run-a-round bikes. What's a good 800-1200 cc cruiser he could put miles on and look halfway cool?

Not sure on the bike question, but you are a VERY good friend. I get leary even letting anyone sit on mine. My butt would have been puckered the entire time ne was gone.

Before my Bob days, I had a sporty and a Yamaha V star Classic, great riding bike, dependable, sounds good with cobra pipes on it and looks like a Fat Boy, would make a good bike to bob, and resale is pretty cheap, I got mine from a officer at Bragg.

$100 month gets you a brand new Sportster......Warranty, road service plan.....Brand new friggin bike......$3000 will get you stuck on the side of the freeway making you think you should have just went with a new bike.....However, I looked at the Sportster and my buddy who had a 79 sportster (who was always stuck on the side of the road) Said to look at the Dyna's because I will get bored with the sportster....so instead of my original plan.....(Spend a little money on a bike) I got the street Bob after it was all said and done....maybe more money than I wantred to spend but I'm happy... and I will be for quite some time....hopefully never stuck on the side of the road....
