Yep, there's a difference. Night Train is a Softail.

"FXD" is a Dyna; so FXDX = Sport, FXDWG = Wide Glide etc etc....

A night train is a Softail; the FXDX's were made from 99 to 05 but didn't get the adjustable suspension and dual caliper front discs until 00.

Try Goggle Images; ie "2001 FXDX". Don't open the "Bikez" sites; full of pop ups and crap.

Now get studying.....

99's have dual disks, but no no adjustable forks or the better FXDX shocks. They just came with Longer rear shocks. (13", I believe.)

Default Sure about the 150? I

I have a 01 FXDX and have a 150 on the rear.

If I were buying again, I'd look for an '02 carb. It was the last year of the Timikin drive side bearing; important if you want to hop it up a bunch...also the first year of the 150mm rear tire and it's new rear fender...
The '02 EFI isn't as sophisticated as the '06 and later, which is why I'd prefer a carb...when I was "looking" I managed to find a real clean 1 owner FXDXT only 1000 miles away; it was worth the drive to me. I've made a few changes since...

Default Will be selling my 01 FXDX after the winter

Not that this helps you now but I am probably going to sell my 2001 FXDX
after the winter. I want to do to many things to the bike that its probably cheaper to sell it and find one with many of the mods already done.
Its Chrome yellow, stage 1, thunder header, spokes, pretty stock, 15K miles.
Pic is a cheat, haven't taken any real pics.

That being said I've started looking at used ones, but I was hoping someone could tell me which years were best if any as I'm sure there were differences much like cars between factory years.

Also what to look for in selecting a used bike... specifics to Dynas or in general mileage, price, etc... anything that would be helpful.

not sure that dynas had EFI before 2004?

sharkey - your bike looked nice in HotBike - prolly already mentioned in the forums here but I don't have time to go thru everything.

as for the post saying everything 06+ is better ... probably correct if you like a more cramped riding position and a bike prone to IPB failures.

Sorry, I stand corrected/enlightened twice...the FXDX had a 150 rear tire and there was no EFI until '04...as for what year is best; that's a whole different argument depending on what YOU want out of the bike. Myself; I wouldn't consider the "newer" bikes as long as there are cheap low mile '01 and '02's around...but I buy with the intent of modifying.

As for the Hot Bike Readers Ride; they totally fabbed the text other than the "103"

What does the 150 mean?

Uhm I'm familar with cars... but typically stage 1 refers to a turbo... is that the case with here? Also what is the advantage of a thunder header vs. stock heaters. Oh also is the engine & exhaust all black as in the pic of the other FXDX?
