A long time friend of mine works as a mechanic at a Harley dealership and performs many dyno tunes which involve different types of exhaust systems.

He has told me many times that unless you are setting up a custom 'tuned' system for high performance race applications, where the peak power is limited to a very narrow RPM range, the various street exhaust systems produce results that are very close.

When it comes to exhaust systems to be used on a 'street bike' and needs to provide acceptable performance throughout the entire RPM range it more of less boils down to your preference in looks and tone.

To me some of the aftermarket systems have a 'tinny tone', and I prefer the deeper tone provided by either the Rush mufflers or the original 'for off road use only' Screamin' Eagle mufflers.

Just don't expect to see large performance increases (quarter miles times, etc.) from nothing more than changing from one street exhaust system to another.. Just go with your own preference as to what looks and sounds the best.

Thanks.I appreciate all the replies.I was really wanting to know what people thought of the sound of the different pipes.I don't expect much performance gain but am not real fond of the"loudness" of the stock Screaming Eagle pipes. However I do like the deep tone of them.Just not quite loud enough for me..lol

Speaking of the original Screamin' Eagle 2 mufflers (which are almost impossible to find these days).....

I was looking for a new set, couldn't find them anywhere, so I contacted Zanotti's. Thought they might still have a set hidden somewhere in a back store room.

Model I'm talking about is the original "For Offroad Use Only" PN 80258-99A, which are baloney cut and have the removeable large diameter baffles.

Anyway, they got back with me and they had 6 or 7 sets, brand new in the unopened factory boxes..

They sold me a set for $160.96 plus $15.28 for shipping.... I checked an old 2003 Parts & Accessories catalog and back then the MSRP was $209, so I got a pretty good deal... (BTW, they are listed in the 2003 Catalog as fitting 1995 and newer Dyna models).

I'm saving these for backup use in case they are ever needed.

If deep is what you're after & you like 2 into 1's, then pay close attention to thunderheader, new rinehart & bassani pro 2 into 1...if ya like 2 into 1's? All 3 perform very well! All 3 are also pretty loud, but not a shi**y loud!

Talking

I think you'll like the Straightshots. I had them on the bike for a bunch of years before switching to the Fatcats.

With the baffles in they sound pretty good, but if you pull the baffles bike gets real loud!
