Not to hijack ... the diagram below depicts a pre-'06 Wide Glide front end ...
Item #17 is the upper 'triple tree' (sometimes referred to as triple clamp) and item #14 is the lower 'triple tree' with the steering stem pressed in ...
These are frequently removed and sent to a powdercoating shop to be blackened ... the stock configuration is chrome or natural aluminum (or polished) finish ...
Also frequently blacked out are the 'lower legs' or 'sliders' ... item #31 in the exploded view ...

If the upper triple tree is removed, there is nothing holding the steering stem in place ...
