I'm sure the T-header guys have things pretty well figured out. If it were meant to be closed/bent like that and if it was that simple to gain hp/tq, it would come that way from the manufacturer.
Actually it helps a lot, I've proven it on the dyno and butt dyno over and over again. I learned about this in a dyno tuning class years ago. It's really easy to do using the right tool without damaging the baffle. I usually bend 3 tabs. It picks up big torque and throttle response under 3k and sometimes picks up through the top too, never had it kill the top end except on a sportster. Biggest improvement is with cams or built motors, stock bikes don't see too much. I always recommend it and I've yet to find somebody that will refuse free power and they're always very happy after.

Installed and I think they look a lot better than the Bassani. Still dragging peg before pipe and they sound amazing. Actually quieter than the Bassani I took off by a little bit, but deeper and meaner - not a single video I've seen has done it justice... I'm also getting less popping on decel now and I haven't even messed with my tune yet. Finally, my highly calibrated butt dyno says I'm seeing better power than the Bassani in a noticeable way.

Couple pics:

Best looking pipe....the first month haha. I think the charring and spotting gives it character. It's a loud, black, POS snowflake- not a single one is alike.
