Bike just got here. Pretty good starting point with the t header and 95". Going to take the tins off tomorrow and prep for some gloss black paint(so original). Also might take apart the primary to see if I need to swap the inner to run mid controls, praying that I only have to switch out my inspection cover for this.

I'd keep the flames if it was me. They're not to crazy and the colors look good. I think you may need a few things other than a new inspection cover. On my 02 the splined shaft comes through the cover and then the shifter arm mounts to the splined shaft.

I dunno man, I've been hellbent on the all black bike for a while now haha, the flames are a little too much for my liking.

As far as the controls go, I'm really hoping that the previous owner kept the splined shaft for the mid controls instead of completely removing it. I really don't want to scavenge around for an inner primary along with a set of mid controls. But if it comes down to it then I'll be in the market for sure, can't stand the feeling of forward controls. Did yours always have mids on it or did you do the switch at some point yourself? Could really use the extra input so I don't spend unnecessary money

Nice score! I like it. If I was taking the time to remove the tins for paint i'd do a little of splash of color in there somewhere somehow though I think.

Man, I'd run it for a summer. The flames are different, but not super weird or stupid. Then next winter, hit the silvers with black powder and maybe do the tins... great looking bike.

Just a suggestion, if you must rid yourself of the Flames... why don't you look for another set of tins (or piece them together, they don't need to match since you're painting) and sell the flames or look for someone to trade plus cash...again, who cares about the other color or paint condition.

As an '01 DX owner here's my $.02:
- I've never ridden an FXR to compare it to, but I've had my FXDX for 3years now and I think it's the greatest. It owes me nothing and I absolutely love it.
- My bike came with mids and forward pegs and for me, it's the best possible setup. I'm 5'11" and I mostly use the mid controls but once in a while (like on long runs or when the wife's aboard) the pegs are nice to help you stretch out. And, you can adjust them to fit many heights.
- I meant to mention this earlier, but I have 9" T-bars on my scoot and just barely made the stock cables work. It's mostly the brake cable that will limit you, but you couldn't go any higher.
- I like the flames. They tip the cap to the original HA versions of these bikes that I fell in love with. Yours are tastefully done and there's no shortage of black bikes out there. I'll be converting my grey pinstripe flames to red pinstripe flames very soon.

There ya have it.

Welcome aboard and enjoy my favourite bike!

I had also thought about doing black with gold pinstripes and dark candy red inside the pinstripes with "harley davidson" in the black flag font. Got a million ideas running through my head at all times for this bike hahah.

I'm planning on sitting on them for a decent amount of time to see if they grow on me. In all honesty the pictures do them more justice than how they look in real life. Theres a lot of chips in the clear coat on the tank and I'm more worried about my clumsy *** spilling some gas and having the entire paint job bubble up

That is also true, might go that route if I can find a set on fleabay without totally ruining my budget

Thanks man! I'm stoked on this bike, cannot stop staring at it haha. I'm 5'11 too and mids just feel a million times better to me. At some point I plan on throwing on a crashbar/highway peg setup for the exact reason of being able to stretch out if I need to. I did a lot more research today and instead of the T bars I might just grab a set of the 8" murdock risers from biltwell and keep the stock bars for now
