Well a service manual is really a must for this.

I recommend removing the tank but a few have done it with it just lifted out of the way.

The top covers are easy and just a matter of removing the 6 bolts.

The bottom covers are a little more involved and take some time. Each Cylinder has to be at TDC to remove them so you have to do them one at a time. I recommend the front one first since it is a little easier to get to, that way you will have done it once when you do the back which is a little tighter to work on.

It takes some time especially your first time so allow for it. Also make sure your pushrods spin freely when you put the new covers on. I would also look at replacing your Tappet covers with chrome why you have it all apart. Just 8 more bolts to do it now but a ton of work to do it later.

+1 on the manual, and a good torque wrench. Don't forget the locktite.

Don't forget to use the chrome fasteners for the covers, attention to detail.

Default rocker boxes.... next?

OK, so i'm bumping this back up because I hit a bit of a stall. I was able to get the tank off w/o any probs.. then the top piece of one of the rocker boxes. And you get the below pics. I am not sure of hte rest of the process.

The bottom covers are a little more involved and take some time. Each Cylinder has to be at TDC to remove them so you have to do them one at a time. I recommend the front one first since it is a little easier to get to, that way you will have done it once when you do the back which is a little tighter to work on. Also make sure your pushrods spin freely when you put the new covers on.
What do I do next?
what is TDC?
how do I make the sure the pushrod spin freely?
What are the torque specs for the rocker box bolts & the ones for the cylinder?

Sry - this is my first time at this.

I ordered a manual - but doesn't come in until Thurs.. would like some steps if u could....

type as though I were an idiot

Top Dead Center. To find Top Dead Center take out the spark plugs and get a straw. put the straw in the hole and turn the rear wheel with bike in gear until the straw is it it's highest point. This is top dead center. Maybe you should wait for the manual...

You can put the bike in 5th or 6th gear and push it while on a hard surface.
