Default Rear Fender Options for '09 FXDF

What's up fellas,

I'm in the market for a new rear fender for my '09 fxdf. I was hoping some of you more mechanically inclined could help identify compatible alternatives. I'm looking for a rear fender that resembles the images below in steel construction.

I've seen fenders with varying degrees of "stretch", but what is the standard?

Is there any reason to avoid fiberglass fenders?

Arlen Ness 7-1/2” Legacy™ Fiberglass Rear Fender (Fiberglass) $239.95

Klockwerks Benchmark 2" Stretched Rear Fender Smooth $400

You are gonna need a fender the same width as your current one(that Ness 7.5" wont cut it as yours is like 9 1/4 or something like that). Or you can cut and widen a steel fender. Fiberglass??? Awful Metric to me.

Steel good! glass bad!

steel is much more forgiving than fiberglass.

I wouldnt go with fiberglass either....its so "Un-harley". Ive have friend here locally that made a new fender for his fatbob, plus some other guys on this site have done it also. Im pretty sure you can use a stock Super Glide fender, but you will will have to cut it in half and add about an inch of material to make it the right width to fit the FB.

To get the full wrap fender like in the pic, I think you would have to use 2 fenders and weld parts of one to the other. I think Ive seen someone here weld a fatboy fender to a super glide fender. You will need the super glide fender to fill in the from the front of the rear wheel to about the end of the struts and used the end part of the fatboy fender to get the full "wrap around". Look up "Ackman" in this forum. I think that is what he did for his FL conversion.

Could be wrong about some of this, but just trying to point you in the right direction.

I consulted the experts at my local Harley shop and they measured the rear fender on an FXDB and helped me find a blank of similar width (8.375"/FXDB and 9"/FXDF). The swingarm rear fenders at RWD come in a variety of styles, good quality steel, and all the popular widths: http://www.russwernimont.com/store/index.php?cPath=2_19

If you're curious, I went with the Longshot.

You can get 2 Dyna fenders, cut one down the middle, bolt each half to the struts, cut a 3" width from the center of the other & tack it to the halfs.
Remove the assembly, add more tack welds (@ 1" apart), some fiber glass & bondo... then paint to your satisfaction.
