Default New S&S Cams

So my big winter project if I can get the $$ up for it, is to install new cams and the Vance & Hines Pro Pipe Hi-output.

I noticed in the Nov. issue of American Iron that S&S has a new cam that automatically eliminates most of the compression until the bike starts. Pretty cool for high c.i. motors that would need a compression release, but I'm thinking it might be nice insurance for when the battery is weak from age or leaving the key on.

Check it out: http://www.sscycle.com/modules/feature/easystart/

The 583 'midrange' cam for Dynas (& Softails) has a very attractive dyno chart.

Thoughts?

Steve

Pretty awesome looking product. If it were me, I'd say I would go gear driven, being that it's being torn apart anyway.

I saw the ad for these new cams, they look awesome as hell. I want to hear some other's experiences with them before I install them.

If they work as advertised, should be a very cool thing to have on higher compression heads.

S&S is top of the line, but I wouldn't go that route. But I wouldn't have enough compression on a streetbike to need them either.

Well if anything it seems like it will save a lot on battery/starter issues, Even with my 96ci I've had a few times where it didn't want to crank over easily, even with a freshly charged battery.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that the cam has more moving parts. What happens if that little counter balance gets stuck somehow (gummed up, use over 40k miles, etc.)? It would be like running with comp releases open all of the time which is just not healthy for much of anything (especailly for the go fast need ).

I really like the idea though, it's clever.

Agreed! Never had any issues with compression releases...keep it simple!

The japs have been using this setup for years. The way it works is it has a tab that stick out holding the exhaust valve open a little on cranking rpm. Then when it starts it has a weight that pulls the tab in from centrifugal force and closes the valve. This tab is on the backside lobe of the cam. S&S makes some good stuff, so it should be a good cam.

I've got the S&S 583 compression release cams w the S&S 106" kit, pushrods, roller rockers, vance & hines pro pipe hi output, and ported and polished heads w manley valves and springs. Love the cams. I have about 1500 miles on em and absolutely no issues. She's fast as hell. Dusted a 1250cc sporty that has all the work done that's possible. She's fast, def recommend to everyone. Afterall, S&S is the best right? They wouldn't sell a shitty product...
