Default Mechanical Noise is getting Louder...

Seems to be coming from the right side. Possibly the cam chain? Is it possible that the cam chain tensioners already need replacing with just 13,300 miles on the bike? Anybody else experiencing this?

It's an 06 that I bought in May of the same year. Warranty went out in 08.

Cam chain is on the left. Don't know if the 06 had the auto-tensioners or not. Does it have an inspection plate on the primary (forward of the derby cover?) If yes, it might need adjustment, if no then you have the auto-tensioners and they're probably fine. Inner primary bearing, maybe? There's a thread on that describing the symptoms which include a rattling sound when the bike is in neutral and the clutch is out. Is that what you have?

No matter what either take it in or call for help. Ask joe what the inside looks like when it lets go. Good Luck.

Default Chains

Primary chain is on the left and cams and chain tensioners are on the right.

With those pipes, can you get the cam chest off and look at the shoes, use a small mirror for the inside shoe. If the 06 have the new style shoes that's awful early.

Wow. I was having one of those days...I read "cam chain," I replied "cam chain" and all the time I was thinking primary chain. Sorry.

First off, you have hydraulic cam rensioners.
If you're really worried about it, buy a new cam cover gasket, 3 quarts of oil and a filter. Drain the oil, paying close attention to whatever ferrous metals that may be stuck to the magnetic plug. Allow your drained oil to sit in the drain pan for about a half an hour, then slowly pour the oil off into the recycling container. Watch what has settled in the bottom of the drain pan. Aluminum fragments will be in there if something has gone wrong. If you have orange plastic in there, you got problems.

If it all looks ok, and you feel ambitious, pull the cam cover. If something is in the process of failing, the big stuff will be in that cavity. The scavenger side of the pump wont pull the big stuff, only smaller pieces, which will generally destroy the pump.

This is what it ought to look like when you pull the cover. Keep a box of kleenex handy if it doesnt, cause you're gonna cry.
