UPS brokerage rip-off!
#11
Dude - NEVER and I mean NEVER let anyone send you something via UPS into Canada - they charge you ridiculous "brokerage" fees to clear your stuff and most of the time get it wrong so you end up paying more duties and taxes than necessary - complete ripoff.
I always ask that they ship it via USPS (post office)...Canada Post delivers it right to your door, no brokerage fees at all. If there is duty owing all you have to pay is a $5 service charge and the duties and taxes.....super convenient and way cheaper.
If you absoutely must use UPS (like if the vendor insists) then ask that they specify that it is not to be delivered but "held" for pickup......its a bit of a hassle but you can go down to Customs and clear it yourself then pick it up at the UPS depot.....no brokerage fees this way. They dont want you to know that you can do it this way but you can (I've done it a few times - my C&C seat most recently)
oh and declaring it as a gift is a bit "dicey"....if it clearly isn't a gift (new in package or whatever) they can seize it or charge penalties for misdeclaring it....not really worth it considering that motorcycle parts are duty free (you just pay GST and PST) anyway
If you want you can PM me and I'll walk you through the process

Now you should know that UPS doesn't have to do any of this stuff to clear it....its all electronic and transmitted to Customs directly from the US point of departure prior to the goods ever getting here....they actually do absolutely nothing on this end to justify the fees they charge you.
Like I said; try to get it send USPS if you can but if it has to come UPS (Fedex is no better really...) then this is the procedure you have to follow if you dont want to pay all the fees.

LIKE CRF states get it held.
Put the address as the UPS address and they automatically hold it since its addressed to them with your name. Don't put UPS as the name put your name of course. Putting HOLD FOR PICKUP is good as well but not needed if the addy is their addy. The UPS depot is literally 2 mins over the Lewiston bridge at Packard Rd, 2nd exit after bridge. They will hold it for 5 days I believe. If you put your phone number on it they will call you when it shows up. They do have weird hours though so make sure to check the hours they are open.
When you cross back into Canada just declare it and pay the applicable taxes. or NOT!!

and I don't use the mail for ebay. you get people who get stuff and deny they got it.

There are the options of insurance..tracking..escrow.. and checking feedback to weed out the bad apples..and I am not one of those people who deny getting stuff. If I were a business, out to make money...I think I would do at least a little research as to why I am eliminating thousands of customers.
