Default Be careful what you paint or don't paint

This is a bike that I saw yesterday. The silver that you see is actually the raw metal. I did not ask how the design was made, but I was told that there was clear coat over it. The problem was that there was small specks of rust from small rock pecks and he didn't know what he was going to do about it. It really did look good.

That is a factory paint option. I know someone with the same paint job but in blue. I think it is cool as hell.

Greetings,

If I had the money the blue version of that bike would be in my garage. I've never heard of anybody having issues with it rusting though...Even though it is bare metal with clear over it. I would think the dealer could help since it should still be under warranty.

Warranty will not cover rock chips in the paint. I would think if you had that paint set you would want to look it over real good on a regular basis. That would allow you to find the chips and touch them up before the rust hit.

I saw some a couple weeks ago in Tampa. They were flat black and cleared metal. It looked awesome.

i have seen those bikes in the show room floor and dam bad ***.

There is a sticker on them in the show room that warn its bare metal under it and to watch for chips and how to care for it a touch up clear or something like the touch up paint is available if memory serves me.

Basically they buff grind that design it paint the rest of the tank then clear coat it all. Would be my opinion on how it is done.

Yup, it's clear over bare metal. It's a cool custom paint technique, but, it's best saved for show bikes only. Clear coat isn't designed to go over bare metal. There are certainly going to be adhesion and durability issues. On a bike ridden regularly, you'd pretty much want to look it over after every ride, and touch up any chips. I'm guessing you'd be looking at major failure of the clear somewhere down the road... maybe a couple of years.
