Chrome Inner Primary Case for 2006 Dyna Low - Which part # ?
I've been looking to "update" my 2006 Dyna Low-rider with a chrome inner primary case instead of the standard black case. My problem is, Harley list three different part #'s : 60794-06 or 60794-06A or 60794-06B. I know this certain year Dyna Low (2006) has/had problems with the IPB (inner primary bearing - replace @15K miles per Harley - that has now been rescinded by Harley) due to bad case fit/machining of the original cases (and possibly the transmission case too?). I was wondering if the 60794-06B case (corrected alignment/updated bearing perhaps?) is the correct case for my 2006 Dyna or do I need to order the original 60794-06 case to avoid any more headaches? As you may I guessed, I'm also changing out the crappy 2 piece rotor/stator BEFORE it disintegrates with the new welded one (40356-06B). Oh yeah, I'm also installing a new front motor mount (47583-90B), the updated chain adjuster (39929-06A) and the steering stem washer (45727-08). Thanks in advance for any info given. Note : All new inner primary cases come with new bearings and oil seals already installed (per Harley - and no, I haven't called my local HD stealership for an answer - I trust you guys for the right info !).

I went with the chrome IPCase when they fixed my second failure of my IPB in May. I had my shop order the chrome one, in addition to the standard black one HD was sending with the kitted repair package. Funny, usually chrome is more $$, but the chrome IPCase was $300 and the black was $400, so when my shop sent the black one back for credit (even after the 15% restocking hit), they came out money ahead. Because they upgraded me to the '07 tranny and IPCases (with alignment dowels circled), my case numbers were the -06A (pictured immediately below), and 34747-06A (tranny case).
...instead of the stock '06 IPCase (-06) you'll need (no alignment dowels) pictured here...
When/if your IPB goes, you'll just get a new bearing/race if it's the first failure. Second time, you should get the '07 [doweled] cases. Search out my "Finally, Good News..." thread from May of this year if you find yourself there.
Either way, make sure the IPB retaining ring is oriented properly in any case you install...see this scan from the Service Manual, last paragraph/pic...

Thanks PKellyMC for this great information ! Per your other post "Finally good news…", I see you also had your transmission case replaced (the one with dowel pins -2007 version) along with the updated case (60794-06A). Since my bike is out of warranty, and the IPB is not making any noises (3500 miles), this "update" is all on my dime and I’ll wait till I NEED to replace the IPB before buying the updated chrome cases (60794-6A or 6B) and the transmission case 34747-06A. I wonder what they (HD) changed on the 60794-06B inner primary case? I do have another question, but now this involves the OUTER primary case. I’ve ordered a new outer case (60764-06) due to some nicks in the original’s chrome. The Harley parts catalog (and website) only lists this part# 60764-06 as the only available OUTER case for all ’06 and later Dynas. HOWEVER, per the diagram you supplied, the 2006 and 2007 OUTER primary cases appear to be different. If you look at the parts that are numbered 3 (small bolt) and 21 (sleeve?) on the 2006 diagram, they are different than the 2007 diagram, which only shows a larger bolt (part numbered 20) in their place. Do you have the Harley Part # index for the 2006 outer case (part numbered 19) and the 2007 outer case (part numbered 18)? Are they indeed two different Harley part numbers for the outer cases?

Hmmmm, I hadn't noticed the difference in the outers and I don't know what the bolts/sleeve you mention are securing. I think there is a difference between the outer case of the Wide Glide (no oval inspection insert) and other Dynas, also due to the forward controls (shift lever shaft does not pierce cases). They re-used my outer primary cover, so it is compatible with the [-06A] '07 inner case.

Hi Black Bart,
Part # 60792-06 (INNER chrome primary case) would be for 2006+ Dynas (and 2007+ Softies) that came with forward foot controls (no mid-shaft hole). Harley list three parts # for your inner chrome primary case: 60792-06, 60792-06A (with the new 2007 dowel pins? – per above diagram for mid-controls part# 60794-6A) and 60792-06B (I’m not sure what the B fixed!? – anyone know?). Could you be one of the few lucky ones that also received a new transmission case (part# 34747-06A) from the shear generosity of The Motor Company?! Or did the HD mechanic simply remove/leave out the dowel pins from 60792-06B and installed it onto your bike without changing the transmission case? On a side note, Harley only list one part# for the OUTER chrome primary case for forward foot controls (60782-06), and only one for my mid-controls (60764-06).

Hi PKellyMC,
The diagrams you supplied above appear to be the mid-mount (which I have) versions of the outer cases (you can see the shifter hole in both cases) and I just noticed you ride a FXDWG (foward controls), so you must have the 60782-06 outer case. I wonder if the illustrator screwed up when drawing that 2007 diagram or if there is going to be an "A" update (or maybe a "B" update - it seem to happen alot with this 2006 Dyna) outer cases coming available. On another side note : I 'm still waiting for my HD 2006 Dyna repair manual to come in the mail (ordered it last Sunday), so I also have no idea what those bolt(s) and sleeve are for.
