Default '92 FXR charging issues

Recently bought this bike from a guy that pretty much kept it in his living room all the time. Has 8,000 original miles so it hasn't had much use. On the ride home it died after 40-50 miles due to a weak battery. After getting the bike home, couldn't get the battery to take a charge, so replaced the battery, and checked the stator with a multimeter. Voltage seemed to be climbing nicely through the rpms. Voltage on battery jumped from about 12.5 at idle to 13.6 at 2-3000 rpms, so seemed to be charging fine. Took it out again and for the first 50-60 miles acted fine. Started hard starting at start ups, then by my return home (120 miles round trip), amperage was way down and couldn't restart. Could this be a bad regulator? I've heard of old regulators working fine at cool temps, then failing after warm up. Is this my problem or could I have other issues? Thanks for all the help.

I recently changed the regulator on my 92 FXR but it did not charge at the battery. A day later my Honda acted just like yours, not charging when hot. Turned out to be the regulator. Found a regulator for the FXR for about $50 on ebay.

O.K., that's a little confusing. Sounds like at first it didn't fix the problem, then it did. Any other help?

It sounds like your stator is fine, so I would suspect the regulator most definitely.

I must have wrote that while I was still asleep. My FXR regulator was bad. No charging at the battery at all. Tested stator which was fine. $50 ebay regulator cured the problem. My Honda Interceptor regulator acted up the next day. It had the same symptoms as you FXR, only acted up when it got hot. Could not get it hot enough to test it but replaced the regulator anyway, problem solved. Sorry for the confusion.

At idle looks good but the volts at 2-3000 rpm's should be in the 14-14.4 volts. I suggest a new regulator and one from Cycle Electric.

Regulator. My dad had the same issues on his 90 FXR. Stator was fine and seemed like it only got in the 12s for re-charging while rev'd up. He swapped out the regulator now it's putting out 14.2 at idle. Before you replace it pull it off and see if the wires are chaffed and just tape them up. The first time my dad had issues a couple years ago he ordered a new regulator and when he was taking off the old one he saw the wires exposed. He taped them up and it worked, but still put the new one on after that because he already bought it.
