Angry Sputtering

Got on tonight to take a quick ride to the store. I got about 100 yards away from the parking lot and the bike started sputtering. Almost like it wasn't getting gas. I put the choke back on a little and it seemed to clear up while I was at the light (it is carbed). Pulled off and was figuring it needed to warm up a bit more even though I haven't had this problem before. Made it about three blocks before it was running rough enough for me to pull over into a Dunkin Donuts (it was the only parking lot that had enough light to see)...Pulled the plugs and though they had a little whiteness and small amount of soot on them they didn't seem excessively fouled. I wiped them down anyway and replaced them. Made sure the plug wires were tight. Looked in the gas tank to make sure there was gas in it (I have been known to to that run out of gas thing by not paying attention). Started the bike back up. Turned over easily but seemed to not be getting enough gas to keep running and if I didn't keep my hand slightly rolling the throttle it would eventually peter out. excelleration was choppy and iratic. Used more throttle than I should have need to in order to get it going and keep it from cutting off.

Of course I had it out a couple of days ago and all was smooth as silk up until the point where I pulled it back in the shop's front door (I keep it in the tattoo shop cause I don't have a garage). This issue sprang up out of nowhere

Needless to say I turned back around to get it home and took the car to the store. I will wait until tomorrow to go over all the wires to make sure there isn't anything lose. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Always something!

Bad gas? Clogged jets? Sure sounds fuel related. Hope you nail it down soon!

Thats the 1st thing I would think as well. I'd get some carb Cleaner and give the carb a good cleaning. But bad gas will cause it to run like holy crap, got some in my street bike and it was very choppy.

Ken,
Have you already tryed riding the bike with the fuel valve in "RES" position?
There is a filter in the fuel valve which has to be cleaned from contamination every 20k miles. If you need some info from the maint. manual I'd be happy to send it to you!

I have the service manual. I fiddled with the valve and took things appart before I rode it and it seems fine today. The bike has 3100 miles on it so I am not thinking it needs the 20k filter change. I will keep my eye on things over the next few days/weeks.

I was going to suggest looking at the VOES and related vacuum lines. There's a hase that connects from the carb to a "T" under the tank. One end of the T goes to the fuel valve on the bottom of the tank to keep gas from flowing when your engine is shut off, and the other goes to the VOES (vacuum operated electrical switch) to affect timing advance under low vacuum conditions. The symptoms don't point right to this as the source of your trouble, but it's always good to check vaccum related parts when you're having a problem like this.
