Default Brakekleen Question?

I am getting ready to do a oil and filter change. I want to be prepared to clean up what ever I need to after removing filter. I have a 2009 Super Glide with the silver engine. All the brakekleen that I have seen says to not get on painted surfaces. Is there a certain kind that I should purchase or will any of these be OK on the engine? I did a search, but did not come up with the answer that I was looking for. Thanks very much in advance.

I personally use simple green and Castrol super clean (purple bottle) for clean ups. You must rinse each very thoroughly..but neither will harm the powdercoat on the engine.

I can't verify that brakecleen will not...and I wouldn't try it, as I use it as a solvent for super cleaning parts. It's harsh.

Shout (spray stain remover) and a hose.

Save the brakekleen for your handguns... works like a charm!

Curl up some cardboard and slip it up under the filter to direct the oil to your drainpan. Once you have that done punch a hole in the lowest point on the filter and one at the top. Next kick bax and relax as the oil in the filter drains. As soon as you have the oil out of the filter you can remove it with minimal mess.

Skip the kick bax part and kick back instead. That is unless you want to come over and kick him (our cat is named Baxter...Bax for short).

Thanks fellows for the suggestions. I do plan on drilling hole in filter. Hopefully, I will have a minimum to clean up. Thanks again.

Just go to any paint or hardware store and get yourself a can of mineral spirits... a very mild solvent that will clean up the mess without damaging your paint.

I just did my fluids about a month ago and I used Brakleen to wash off the front of the frame, no problem. Does not harm paint, gets rid of the oil mess fast and dries fast. Plus I keep it around for all kinds of things like that so it is always on my shelf.

Other methods will obviously work but tested by me (at least on a black engine) with no problem.....also 18 years of wrenching on cars with no paint issues.

Brakleen will definitely eat plastic... it will eat some paints and even dull powder coat. I use it often, but I would be cautious using it around your frame and case. I have one of those little "engine degreaser" air tools that is designed to spray mineral spirits or kerosene. I use it on my engine (09'SB) and on my Crotch Rocket which has a lot of plastic and paint and they both come out spotless with no dulling or damage. Just follow up with something mild like soap and water. Side note, don't get Castrol Super Clean on anything polished (like your rocker boxes) or it will destroy the finish...
