Default Rear tire locked up at 60 mph!

Hi all, here is one for you... Yesterday my buddy left his sister's house on his 99 Wide Glide and reached about 60 mph when the motor quit and his rear tire locked up. He kept it upright until it left the road and ended up dumping it in the grass. Fortunatly he walked away with only a bruised rib and some cosmetic damage to the bike (he'll need a new tire also) but now the mystery as to why. He said the oil level was good and it was running normaly before hand. Currently the transmission seems to shift fine and the bike moves freely in neutral and when the clutch is pulled in but the motor seems to be locked up and all the starter does is click. We need to get it into my garage so we can get the primary cover off. We would like to determine what caused it to lock up before deciding to take it to the dealer. Any ideas?

scissored the crank? seized a piston? Froze a main bearing, but their is usually some noise first... should be interesting.

This is just another thought
Check to see if rear pully didnt back out some, and bind or lock against swingarm.., its always the last thing you find
Like did you ever notice it always rains at the end of a drought.

I had a XL 1200 Custom lock up on me once. One of the bolts that hold the sprocket came loose and got caught in the swing arm. Scared the begeezus out of me. I ended up installing a chrome swing arm when it was replaced..

Never a good time. I took a huge nail through the tread of the tire on my Road King at about 75mph outside of Vegas. Absurdly loud clang and then the rear wheel froze. Nail was long enough to go through the tire and hit both sides of the swingarm and strong enough to lock up the rear wheel.

Sounds like he could have saved it if he pulled in the clutch but who thinks perfectly clear in those situations? Had a similar thing happen in a Mustang. Whe were headed to Portland, OR in a friends 68 and second gear siezed to the mainshaft at 70 MPH. Ended up driving back to the nearest town in "neutral". You had to be in neutral or you were in two gears at the same time and it would kill the engine. Scary stuff when if goes like that.

If he didnt do an upgrade yet, I wonder how his cam chain tensioners look. Could have lost one causing the engine to get out of time....Engine failure?

Well I guess I got something to think about while I'm out enjoying my new Harley That's going to make those long rides in the country that I like more like a white knuckel ride waiting for the wheels to lockup on me? Thanks for the thread..........I think?

I'm hoping that your buddies 99 hasn't been maintained much over the past 10 years?
