Default Changing to Gear Drive?

I got 32000 miles on my bike now and I have been told I should check my cam bearings, The cam chain tensioner and the cam chain. So thinking about this and doing some research maybe I should just chance over to the gear drive.

My question is if I go this route can I do it without changing my cams?

If I need to change the cams which cams should I go with that don't require any other motor work? I like torque more then HP...

Here are the cams I was thinking about, what you think?

Part number 288121G

Or maybe a kit that comes with everything needed?

Thanks for any help guys!!

Naz

you can go the gear drive route without changing cams. If you do change them and your motor is fairly stock like intake and exhaust only then don't be afraid to try the 26G

Just read a thread somewhere about some one who went the gear drive and now hears the gears. Yes the cam chain shoes should be checked soon, if replacement is required change out the inner and outer cam bearings while the work is being done. It's your investment and your call.

Never heard of this, could you elaborate? Does someone make a kit? I know with mine there is no way to go full gear drive because the inner sprockets are part of the cams.

I've read in these forums somewhere about people converting to the newer style chain drives.

That make sense, I didn't even consider that. Didn't want to call BS on it because there is a lot I don't know that others do.

If you do go gear drive, don't forget to check the crank runout first. More than .003 and it'll eat itself. But, tensioners, if they are like the ones on my '07, are a snap to replace. Good luck!

I remember visiting revolutionperformance.com and they will true and weld your crank for about $100. That way you will have no more than .001" runout. If you have more than that the gear drive won't work. Too much shifting of the crank. Let me clarify on the revperformance price....that's you sending them your crank.

That is definitely a winter project. You could do all your upgrades then.

Sorry, I guess that's why there is a preview post option. I have a gear drive in my road glide and if you try to hear it you can. I kind of like the sound. Again not real noticable unless on the left side.
