Default How accurate is the gas gauge?

I generally go by my gas gauge so when it says I only have 10 miles left I get to a gas station right away. When I fill it up though it only takes 3.5 gallons. I thought I had like a 5 gallon tank on this thing, so is it just my gauge is a not that accurate? This is on an 09 Superglide by the way.

Don't depend on the guage, accuracy varies.

Reset your trip odometer when you fill up, check your gas mileage after running through a tank full and figure how far you can go before needing gas.

After that, just use the odometer.

I've pushed my gas gauge all the way to the left of the red and was at 200 miles and filled it up just under four gallons, which mean I can probably run 250 miles before it ran out of gas. I usually go by the trip meter and start looking for a gas station about 150-175 miles. I have a 4.8 gallon tank and the fatbob runs a 5 gallon tank.

I know that the reading on the gauge on my '04 WG changed when I installed the 1 3/4" tank lift.

My FXDC has the 5.1 gal FatBob tank as well.... I watch the needle, but judge it by odometer... depending on how much fun I have with throttle, over 200 miles per tank easy. Generally get 46-48mpg

Forget the gauge..fill up to the max and go by the trip odometer..you cant trust the low fuel light either...mine varies by 50-75 miles....

So what is everyone's feel for how many miles I can go? I don't want to run out of gas to find out.

I dont follow how your fuel gauge tells you you that you have 10 miles of fuel left...I do have an 07 so maybe the 09 have more gauges...:>)

Fill the tank up, ride about 100 - 150 miles and fill up again.

Divide the total miles by the gallons of fuel used to get your average miles per gallon.

Multiliply that by tank capacity to get your MAXIMUM range before empty - say that works out to 200 miles, then make it a habit to start looking for fuel about 50 miles before that point.

Some models have a miles to empty display option in the odometer window.
