Default Need buying help

I have a very limited budget and thought i was set on a sportster since it was more in my price range, but I have found the following

1986 Harley Davidson Low Rider
has 35k miles but motor was bored, has hi comp, cams, heads port and polished, and maybe a few other thing done about 6 months ago
new clutch
tons of chrome
apes
3 seats
vance and hine pipes, sans carb and intake
and a few other mods.

I know the shop that did the work and they are some of the best around and they said the bike was gone over by them and was in excellent shape. I know the owner of the bike and just purchased a Road King and told me he would sale me his low rider for 5k cash if ill get it this weekend, before his long ride. What do you guys think about this deal? I wasnt sure I wanted this old a bike but it better sized for me at 6'2 and 250 lbs than the sportster is, but just wondered is this gonna cost me alot more in the long run with repairs over getting a 2004 or 2005 sportster 1200C

I'd say 5K running, and transfer the warranty on the engine work to your name.

According to the NADA, 5k is a fair price for the bike. It would definitely fit you better than a sporty.

Thats what I was afraid of but thinking of saving some more and getting a newer model low rider, really like the street bob just dont have 10k to spend, more like 6k tops right now, maybe I can find one in and around my range soon or it will be next year before I ever get to ride.

But I was thinkin I would be better off learning the ropes on the sportster, just dont know what to do. I would prefer a newer bike but just funds dont allow it. Been saving for almost 2 years and have saved up 5k but need more to get a dyna or softail or i could get a newer sportster asap, what to do?

IMHO 5k is a lot of money.

Sounds like your not entirely sold on the idea of purchasing either the 26 year old low for 5k or a sportster atm.

I would suggest that if you can save up a bit more money you could get alot more bike.
If you can save up another 2.5-3.5 k you will be able to buy a much newer bike of your preference. I know that is easier for me to say than to do. Ask yourself if you are going to be satisfied with the bike you are considering purchasing.

Also I would seriously suggest buying in the off season,(if you can wait), as you will save some serious cash.

Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,

Tom

Get ya a new dyna, If you got 5k cash, Harley will finance ya.
Bought the OL a bare bones FXD fire Pearl Red new 07, with 3 grand in extras (I installed) 15k... they wanted to compete for my financing...
7.9% eh not so bad
Sold me the 2 year extended warranty, with the condition if we dont use it get a full refund... Yup I got it in writing...
Get the bare bones and customize as ya go, new Harley just a starter kit anyhow....

I really don't think the sportster is the way to go for you.
I'm happy with my 95 FXDWG and paid $6500 for it.
Look hard and don't jump on the first one.
