Default Oil and a noisy 5th gear

A month ago I went into the dealership to schedule my 1000 mile maintenance, almost fainted when he told me how much it was going to be. They recomended switching all the fluids to the expensive Harley 20-50 synthetics, he said that it makes things easier, you only need to take a quart of oil on the trips and it covers all three holes.

I ended up doing my own service bought took his advice and put the 20W-50 in the crankcase, primary and transmission. With these fluids I now have about 1500 more miles on it and I'm not happy with the sound of the trans in fifth gear. I've been wrenchen for 35 years and always been of the impression that noise=wear. So I drained the trans today and refilled with some Redline 75W-90 synthetic and boy what a difference. It tamed it way down and the square 5th gear is very acceptable now noise wise.

I've looked into the Harley owners manual and repair manual and they dont say what weight oil to run in the primary and trans, they just say to use their oil which is dino oil. Now my thinking is if the dealership says it is ok to run 20W-50 in the gear box the redline should be just fine, am I right??

Also, thinking of putting the Redline in the primary too, anybody have anything good or bad to say about this or that??

THX

Did he say why you need to take a qt of oil with you in the first place? Does your bike leak tremendous amounts of oil??? strange. I run Royal Purple 75/90 in my tranny. Mobile 1 in my motor, ATF in my primary. Absolutely no problems with this combination. Don

The dealer was telling that IF he was low in any of the three holes he would be covered by having 1 qt of the oil with him.

Usually to rid of the fifth gear noise you need to go to a thicker fluid, generally a gear lube. Get some 75/140 of you brand of choice and you should notice a difference.

i was using royal purple 20-50 in the trans and primary, and the royal purple 85-140 in the trans, a great combination for combatting wear, and helping with heat. now that royal purple has gone throgh the roof, from 8 bux a quart to 17 bux? thanks anyway, i'm gonna use syn 3 from hd for 9 bux a quart. wish that car oil in the mobil 1 brand would work. far cheaper at 26bux for a five quart jug at walmart. just don't know if it has the proper additives for the clutch area and crankcase. can't afford to experiment

Hey Don , hows it going?
No bike dont leak a drop, just like Nick said, dealer thought it would be easier to have one lubricant to do all three holes. I got the 20W-50 out of the trans and the 75W-90 in and things are better, wondering what some thicker oil (140)would do???
