Default steering head bearing my butt

hey all i got an 07 street bob and a few weeks ago i started hearing the dreaded thunk thunk noise that had become so common among the owners of these model years that the moco sent out a service bulletin to the nations dealerships

warning them of a potential problem, i even called my stealership describing the noise and symptoms
and the service manager said "yup bring it in that sounds like what it is"

(although he denied ever recieving a service bulletin about the matter)

and being this is the riding season the couldn't fit me in for a while

anyway i was riding it today and went over some bumps and manhole covers hearing the thunk thunk as i went so i pulled up to a red light and i'm sitting there

and just for giggles i remembered what somebody said in a previous thread about the gas tank being loose and making a very similar noise

so i grabbed both sides of the tank and lifted and let it loose......

wouldn't you know it....thunk thunk,

i just started cracking up, rode on home grabbed a ratchet and a wrench and a good solid turn or so later and no more noise at all

that was a blessing so thank you to whoever it was that suggested a loose gas tank in the first place
good call

Where on the gas tank did you lift it? Which bolts need tightening? Today I noticed a similar problem (see my post). The sound definitely seem more like it's coming from the tan k or below it than the front end, although I guess anything's possible.

I will check your suggestion in the morning.

There are two bolts on the tank, one in front and one in back. To get to the rear one you need to pull the seat. A 1/2" wrench/ratchet will get them tight but becarefull not to slip and whack the paint.
