As soon as I read this I grabbed a ruler and ran out to my bike. It must be because it's a new bike ('09 SG) that I got concerned.
It moves about 1/16".

Looks like all's ok then? I just wanted to make sure the shaft was into the shifter far enough to eliminate excess movement. Sounds like you're good to go!!
Thanks for the concern. When I checked what you said, I noticed that my lever and shaft end are not flush. It's less than a 1/16th off but I may still move my lever in a bit. Just for stability.
You might want to see if you still have the rubber spacer between the outer primary cover and the shift lever (foot side). If it aint there, the shaft will move laterally and you'd better get one on there before the shaft and bushings corrode
