I notice that when I start my 06 fxdli that it revs about 1500....let it idle about a minute for warm up and when I do first shift it almost grinds getting into gear.
Just had it in for the 1000 mile service.....Only had bike for 500 miles or so and cannot really recall if it did it before or not....
Should I warm up longer to let revs come down?
Suggestions?

Don't be timid on the shifter. You'll get a clunk, but every one of these bikes 'clunk' when shifting cold. You may want to make sure you're running something like Redline HD shockproof or Mobil 1 75/140 in the tranny... makes it smoother.

As far as warming up, depends on how cold it is. I let my bike idle while I'm putting on the jacket, helmet and gloves, then off I go.

Been doing this for years with no problems ....

 

I let the EFI bike idle (warm up) for a minute or until the rpm's drop, then I just blip the throttle and have noticed the rpm momentarily drop to 1000 rpm and I make the first shift. The clunk isn't as bad as a higher rpm clunk. Just my technique and works for me.

 

Fire it up, when the idle comes down to normal, take off. Fuel injection needs no "warm up" time.

 

When they serviced it they probably put Formula+ in the primary and transmission. IMO, F+ is too thick for the primary. When the engine is cold F+ lets the clutch drag which results in a significant crunch-n-jump when you put it in 1st until the motor gets good and warm.

You can dump the primary and refill with ATF (I'm using B&M Trick Shift in mine) or any 15w40 HDEO. That should do away with your cold shift problem.

 

Put in redline heavy shockproof if the clunk bother you. It will make it smooth as butter, at least as smooth as a Harley can be.

 

i have amsoil 75-140 in mine and i get the clunk if iam in a hurry and don't let it warm up but its reving high because a fuel injected motor does have its own little choke so to speak that is why its reving up. If you let it idle it will come down and like said give it a blip of the throttle let it settle and go.

I usually pull it out garage fire it up let it idle while i get jacket and smoke and then its at normal idle and i go.

 

That's because what's in the transmission is going have next to no effect on a cold clunk/crunch into 1st gear. The crunch is from clutch drag caused by cold, thick primary lubricant. Only way to reduce it is to put a thinner lubricant in the primary.

 

let your bike warm up longer than a min! i let mine warm up a good 4 min, then ride for another 5-10 before really getting on it.
