had my '06 600rr up to 155 a couple times, and it was still pulling! have only had the Dyna to about 90. Im so focused on not getting blown off teh biek at that speed, im barely paying attention to what in front of me. Main reason for that is, i only weigh a buck 65. so the wind pretty much tells me where to go, lol.

Essentially all of the fairing's mass is ahead of the steering head axis. For stability, especially in crosswinds and bumpy curves, this is not a good scenario. That and the additional weight of the tour pack and part of the bag weight located aft of the rear axle just adds to the instability issues at high speeds, maybe even more than the fairing does. Add to that the less-than-rigid swingarm mounts on the pre '09 baggers and you have a non-recoverable high speed wobble waiting to happen. Sorry, but that's just the way it is.
I wasn't arguing any of the points that you bring up ... just laying out the basic fact that the fairing itself is quite light in as far as the actual amount of weight it represents ....

I was amazed that when I took the thing off for a couple of days my fuel mileage went from about 36 to almost 42 ... dressing my bike with the fairing, lower fairings and hard bags takes about 5 MPG away ...!

About same story here, CBR 900RR, got to around 160, once, not one for racing, but just out of curiosity I tried. My FXDB, got to about 110 and then had to relax a bit, but felt like she had more to give, just too windy with the apes..

Default How fast

I havde an 06 Dyna FXDI3500 with bags and windshield qand living in Canada my speedo is metric so when stock it would put the speedo to just over 200 kph, I have done extensive motor work eg 131 ci and about everything else you can do: daytona twintec controller bc gerolamy dual port inj raqised port ported and polished heads 2.02 intakes 1.8 exhaust two into 1 specialoty exhaust from stainless creations, balanced, 10.5 comp, andrews 67Gcams etc and when I did the motor work I installed athe 2 tooth larger front sprocket from andrews(6%overdrive). The first time I took it out for a test blast without the shield and bags at 180 kph it felt strange, still accel hard in 5th but started to develope a weave so I backed out of it. Later after being broken in a little better and setting the stock rear springs as hard as possible it will put the speedo well past the end which is 220 kph. I weigh 280 to 300 lbs and a friend was here last summer and wanted to go for a blast, I took him 2 miles out of town (2lane road) and pulled hard all the way throug to the top of 5th gear and the odometer was past 220 kph both ways. I have since installed a DD7 from Baker new ohlins on the rear and am doing the front forks from Motorcycle metal right now with dual brembos and his cartridge system and a rear brembo from an 08 dresser. I have purchased a camera which will enable me to take video capeable ofv being uploaded so will be later able to take you on a virtual blast on my bike via webcam posting so watch your new posts. My time is limited and I am only home for 2 days a week so that will take a few weeks. 220 km + approx 130 and still in 5th REED

I am 60 yrs old now and still foolish but in my younger yeqrs when I used to ride metric I had a Suxuki Kataana serial # 000074 the 74 done produced, In the US your Katanas were 1000cc while Canada got 1100s. I had worked on the carbs and installed a good 4 into 1 exhaust, it would do 240 KM the end of the speedo any day and on a cool evening hit 260 well past the end of the numbers.
One sunday afaternoon I believe thanksgiving day I had gotten off work at 3 PM and had to ride to the farm for dinner at 5 PM,approx 75 miles from work. I got there before 3:45 PM on a downhill stretch with a slight tailwind I HAD THE SPEEDO WOUND AROUND TO THE PEG AT 0 KMPH SO i FIGURE SOMEWHERE ABOUT 185 MPH.iF AND WHEN YOU EVER GET TO THAT SPEED IT IS AN INCREDIBLE FEELING. Cars you are metting that you can first see3 about 2-3 miles away you meet in seconds, on the Katana behind the small wshield they had there seemed to be absolutly no wind, minor bumps and imperfections in the road were gone and you sort of float over the saddle as with the clipons your body becomes part of the aerodynamics of the machine, lane changes seem slow and deliberate and oh what a letdown when you have to slow to 60, feels like you could crawl that fast. I work with a friend who is a great mechanic he told me that even though you hit 120 it would still keep pulling. He said just because it says 120 doesn't mean it can't go faster than that. I think this falls under the same question of how many licks does it take to get to the sweet spot of a top end Dyna.
