Default So what's this leak and what do I do about it?

Just got my bike back (finally) from the place that was doing the insurance work post-spill. Generally all looks fine, except I noticed this link from the left side by the kickstand.

I they weren't so far away and hard to deal with I'd bring it back, but as it stands I'd rather either take care of it myself or bring it to the dealer or a local mechanic.

What is this that's leaking, engine oil or transmission fluid, and what can I do to fix it (or should I bring it to a pro)?

They did replace the primary cover and gasket as part of the repairs. so is this some seepage because of the new seals, snd I should clean it and wait & see?

Thanks.

My guess is the primary case seal, but its hard to tell from that photo and harder to tell on a black motor.

Its your tower post gasket.Remove your outer primary cover. The hole were your mid shifter shaft used to go,there should be a gasket on the inner primary side of the hole(when your inner and outer are put toghether it seals that gap so fluid cant get by).The gasket looks like a donut and has adhesive on one side to hold it in place.Your gasket is probably damaged or missing.Replace you should be good to go.

looks kind of like its comming out where the shaft used to be. There is supposed to be an oring that goes on the back of the primary where the shaft used to go through and they might have not know it needed one I would take it back and have them go over it and fix it right.

I would have to agree with buzzard game. I had the same problem. Mine was leaking through the ouside (through the little chrome insert) and from the inside of the primary where the mid control shift shaft used to go. Yeah just replace, that gasket. You should be golden.

Yeah, I've got a better photo (attached). I'd bring it back but I really don't want to deal with the place the did the other work again. Long story.

Is this something I can take care of myself, or do I need to take it to the dealer? How hard is it to just take off the primary cover and replace the gasket? Looks pretty straightforward. I would have to do it on the jiffy stand if I did it. I have all the wrenches etc. and a shop manual.

Any advice?

It's not hard to do and it can be done on the stand but the primary gasket is like $25-30 bucks along and you have to replace it everytime you pull the cover or it will leak. You will also have to use some brakecleen to clean all the oil away from the gasket surface to get a clean seal which would be really hard on the kick stand. I would take it back, it's about $50 worth of parts and a pain, let them eat the money.
