Default FXR problem

I don't know for sure what section of the forum to ask this, but being as how I stay here most of the time, I thought I would ask here. I have a friend who has a 92 FXR. The problem is, it runs great for maybe 40 or 50 miles. Then it will shut down. He will wait for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, starts back up and runs good. The bike has a new battery. He has checked and rechecked battery connections. He has also replaced the voltage regulator and I believe changed a couple of relays. Anyone have any ideas as to what may be going on? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Check the fuel lines for bad spots.

I had a work truck one time that did the same thing. It would run for awhile but then the fuel line would collapse cutting off the fuel. After it sat a few minutes the line would uncollapse (word?) and the truck would run fine for awhile before it did it again.

Just 1 idea for ya.

bberck, thanks for the reply. I should have mentioned that I believe that it has to be an electrical problem since it will not try to start for those 5 or 10 minutes. Nothing when you hit the start button.

Maybe pull the fuses and check for corrosion and put some dielectric tune up grease on it. Tighten all of the connections! Even our newer bikes have this fuse corrosion problem if you water down your bike. Check for wire rubs!! Also use the troubleshooting guide in the shop manual. My dad has a 90 FXR and he had a similar problem. He thought it was the voltage regulator, but when he took it off the wire were bare with all the rubber rubbed off.

sounds like a dead short.start tracing wires.when i first read i was thinking a coil was going or gone bad, until i relized you said it wouldnt do anything for 5 or 10 min's.i would bet its taking awhile for the relays to reset.just my 2 cents
