Question about wrapping exhaust pipes
I just read a misc. post from someone (Mudpuddle?) stating that wrapping your exhaust with the now popular gray or black "tape' won't block heat. He posted a photo of his burnt shoe to prove it. I can understand the wrap holding heat in on dragsters etc. exhausts for some kind of performance gain, but I also thought it would act as a heat barrior instead of heat shields...

The wrap may knock it down a few degrees to the touch, but it's still skin scalding hot. A 1/8" fiber wrap isn't gonna do much for heat blockage.
I think the hot rod mentality of heat wrap is to lessen the transfer of heat through the metal skin of the pipe and keep it flowing out the end....increasing exhaust speed.
It's not intended to keep you from burning your feet while riding with flip-flops.

Man, that's the first time I've heard of that. From reading about wearing gloves to install, I thought they were crazy asbestos/fiberglass like, nasty toxic materials that would enclosed the heat.
Oh well, I got 50 feet of the black stuff up for sale now.... I think I'll put the old heat shields back on and make the Ol' Lady happy after all.
