Question about changing primary fluid...
#22
My '08 manual says the same, but that's only correct for initial fill. You'll never get it completely empty via the drain hole. The correct level for refills is to just overlap the bottom of the clutch diaphram (with the bike vertical). Mine took 27oz to get to the that point. Overfilling can cause slippage and difficulty finding neutral.

Obviously, had the manuals stated the bike needed to be upright to refill the primary, I would not have posted a question about it. Nowhere did I ask about the capacity of the primary or the proper amount to put in. The manuals I have for my bike are clear on that. It's 32 oz. Some of the answers I'm getting should show everyone why it's important to get a service manual and independently verify as much information as you can when it comes to things like this. Not to disparage anyone here, but the info that is sometimes posted on this forum is simply not accurate, or may not be applicable to every model bike.

After I asked the neighborhood question I went and looked at my conversion tables
and a British quart is 38 oz of which 32 is approx .86
anyway, I figured the PNW by your name to be Pacific NorthWest. right???
The Brits get a lot more for their money when they buy a quart.

My '08 service manual says 32oz Wet. page 1-19, table 1-9.
Page 6-2, under Primary Chaincase Cover, step 6 of installation: 6. Place motorcycle in an upright position and fill primary chaincase (see 1.9.. [above] .)
Says nothing about being wet or dry, in the instructions for replacing the primary cover.

Changed it today, and that's what I did. It was more than upright enough to keep the fluid from running out when I put in the whole quart.
Dumped whatever they put in at the 1000 mile service and put in B&M Trick Shift. I'll have to wait until my next cold start to see how it does cold, but I immediately noticed the clutch take up is much more linear now. Finding neutral is no problem, but it wasn't before either.
