Overfilling can cause slippage and difficulty finding neutral.

Neither the service manual nor the owners manual for my bike mentions anything about the proper level being the bottom of the clutch diaphragm. They both say to add 32 oz. Where are you getting your information for the "correct level"?

Well, my manual doesn't mention any procedure for actually checking the primary fluid level. As for checking the transmission oil using the dipstick plug, it says to check it on the jiffy stand. (Page 90: "With the motorcycle on a level surface and resting on jiffy stand, check lubricant level.")

Obviously, had the manuals stated the bike needed to be upright to refill the primary, I would not have posted a question about it. Nowhere did I ask about the capacity of the primary or the proper amount to put in. The manuals I have for my bike are clear on that. It's 32 oz. Some of the answers I'm getting should show everyone why it's important to get a service manual and independently verify as much information as you can when it comes to things like this. Not to disparage anyone here, but the info that is sometimes posted on this forum is simply not accurate, or may not be applicable to every model bike.

Of the manual states, "Place motorcycle in an upright position and fill primary chaincase."

Hope this helps.

I changed my oils last night and got the whole quart in while the bike was on the side stand.

My '08 service manual says 32oz Wet. page 1-19, table 1-9.

Page 6-2, under Primary Chaincase Cover, step 6 of installation: 6. Place motorcycle in an upright position and fill primary chaincase (see 1.9.. [above] .)

Says nothing about being wet or dry, in the instructions for replacing the primary cover.

My 07 manual states 32 oz. For what it is worth I had to stand the bike up to get the full 32 in.

I just make a friend hold the bike vertical while I'm filling it. 3 minute favor.

Changed it today, and that's what I did. It was more than upright enough to keep the fluid from running out when I put in the whole quart.

Dumped whatever they put in at the 1000 mile service and put in B&M Trick Shift. I'll have to wait until my next cold start to see how it does cold, but I immediately noticed the clutch take up is much more linear now. Finding neutral is no problem, but it wasn't before either.
