Its detonation. They all do it. 69 people on this thread with the same problem and 17 mechanics have said its detonation, its normal.

Get louder pipes. Then you won't hear it.

I hear the same sound on my Ultra Classis when I accelerate. Back off and it goes away.

Funny though...how some folks may equate "normal" with "ok". It may be normal, but you better fix it, or stop doing what is causing it. Detonation ain't pretty.

Its sensible to check for loose bits obviously but the clear thing here is that the sound is identical to the sound of detonation, it happens under acceleration which is when detonation occurs, hot weather, lower revs and heavier loads will all increase the likelihood of detonation.

You know what I think it is.....

Detonation is not a good thing - it kills engines and it can sometimes kill them fast. It needs to be looked at. Changing the riding style is the cheapest way of sorting it - only really works if you get it at low rpm riding and it's the bikes way of telling you to turn the throttle and stop being a wimp. Increasing quality of fuel is often all you need to do, sometimes boosters are needed, rejetting/remapping is sometimes required. Checking the ignition, timing, looking for airleaks in manifolds etc is also sensible. The key thing is to prevent it or the engine will damage itself, performance will gradually deteriorate and it will eventually be scrap.

My 07 FLHTC did this really bad they ended up putting a new 02 sensor and doing a download to change the fuel/air mixture...messed up my fuel mileage because they made it run richer...then got a stage 1 and SE breather...doesn't do it anymore.

i have been messing with the same prob for long time now. i tuned most of it out with my

tts mastertune. what worked real good for me was to up the accel pump tables a couple

of units + more fuel in the o2 bias tables. i also retarded the timing a bit, but like i said

the biggest help was the accel.pump table it cured 90% of it.
