I have a 2009 SB and it did the tinging noise at 4th and 5th gear once in 6th gear the sound went away maybe too much wind noise not letting me hear the annoying tinging sound, got under the bike and the jiffy stand was actually hitting the frame at certain vibration points i just repositioned the peace of rubber between the jiffy and the frame, and booom problem solved!!!!!!!!!!

I find if you gear up and run below 2500 rpms and hit the throttle you will lug and ping the engine. Keep the rpms up.

I had the sam eproblem with my 2008 Fat Bob. I took it too the dealer and described it to them the same way..."sounded like a slappping in the primary". They took it in and opened 'er up and found a faulty tensioner. They replaced and it and it has been fine since.

i have the sound too on my 2011 RGU. sounds like a couple bbs in my fuel tank or in the primary. only when i accelerate though... and i also noticed it when its nice and hot outside, like it has been the past week in san diego.

I have a 08 low rider and I get a pinging noise around 2000 to 2200 rpm while crusing in 5th or 6th. Seems like above that range or below that range it sounds ok. I am pretty sure it is the valves makeing the noise. Also the motor seems to run extremely hot to me. The rear cylinder goes to the cooling mode( which I didn't know about) quite often. I don't have an oil temp gauge so I don't know what it is. I do have an oil cooler I am going to install.
I have had the bike a little over a month. The guy that had the bike before me had chrome works slip on mufferlers ( 2 7/8" baffles) and a stage one screamin eagle stage one kit put on it at some point but did not have any kind of tuner on it. I have put a power commander 111 on it. I forgot to say it had a pop between shifts and a popping when down shifting and the powercommander did get rid of that it seems.
It still seems to me it is running much to hot. I have tired two different maps with the commander and it didn't help the heat or the rear cylinder cutting out. I am going to try a 1xu24 denso or the 10r vrod plug. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Lowriderr9 - the best suggestion I can offer is that you run the bike at higher rpm - 2000 to 2200 is deep in the lugging zone and will cause ping and other damage. Keep it around 3000 and never below 2500. Harleys aren't meant to run where you are running it.

i didnt read all 10 pages of comments.. BUT

plain and simple
... its pre-ignition/detonation

my 2011 FXDC does the same running 93.. exactly as op described.. thats why fulie bikes blow.. would love a carb.. running slipons w/ stock breather

the solution is:

run the bike cooler (change ambient climate)
add fuel (run cooler)
retard timing (lose performance)
lower compression (lose performance)
boost octane

simply put.. these bikes run too lean and too hot to satisfy EPA requirements..

the solution ultimately cost $$$$$$.. these bikes need to be tuned off the showroom floor.. i live in TX w 100 degree days and 80% RH.. not aircooled bike friendly environment.

site below is quite thorough:
