Oil - Opinions from Dyna Riders
I am gonna change oil in all 3 holes. I have been searching the tech sections for a while and seriously I am kinda blown away with all the choices. What do you guys who wrench on your own bikes use! My last two engine changes were HD oil. I think I am gonna go synthetic. Do you guys use ATF in the trans?
Thanks In advance

You will get a bunch of answers!
I use Mobile 1 V-twin 20/50 in the engine. Redline HD shockproof in the tranny, and HD formula in the primary case.
ATF is only for automatic transmissions. You need a heavier gear type lube, for gear to gear setups.. gear to gear = heavy shock load on the meshing gear tooth faces.
Basically, a good synthetic for the engine: Mobil 1, Amsoil..... A good synthetic for the tranny: Redline, Mobil 1, Amsoil, and a good basic dino for the primary. The reason for not using a synthetic in the primary, is it may cause clutch slippage because synthetic oils are a bit more slippery.
If you are going to use a filter other than Harley premium, make sure that it handles down to 5 micron. Harley filters do... not sure about the others.

Redline in all three. I use their V-twin engine oil, Shockproof V-twin trans oil and V-twin primary oil, and HD filter.
I order it all from here: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/c...y/Red_Line_Oil
(except for the filter of course)
I also use Redline in my car's transmission, transfer case and rear diff.

That issue is up for debate too. I run synthetic (Royal Purple) in the primary specifically for that reason. If you do a lot of slow speed maneuvers, or are stuck in rush hour traffic, slippery oil is cheaper than a clutch.

I guess it would depend on what your major mode of operation is: mostly in town (more clutch action) or mostly cruising (less clutch action).

There may be other valid reasons not to use a particular synthetic fluid in the primary, but the fact that it is synthetic (be it primarily PAO, Group III Hydrocracked, or some combination of both) is not one of them.
