Default Ape's on 06 FXDI

I was looking to change the stock bars to some apehangers. What is the max height I can go without replacing all of the cables. Any pic's, websites or model #'s would be greatly appreciated...Thanks.....

Not certain, but I think your clutch and throttle/idle cables will have to be replaced if you go with anything bigger then the 10.5 inch mini apes. You should have enough electrical wiring phor up to 12"s.

Yea, I am wanting to change my bars on my 05 FXDI to the mini apes hangers like on the ones on the Street Bob. I was told by others all you had to change was the brake line. Another said the brake line and clutch cable. So out of curiousity, I went to the dealer. He said everything would need to be changed, including wiring, 400 bucks! plus 3 hours labor! The bars I'm looking at are H-D part number 56563-95 have a 8.5" rise, only 4" more than stock. I'm thinking just the brake line and re-routing the others would work.

I had mine done and replaced all the cables with braided lines. Really like the way it came out.

If you actually ride the bike, you'll need to replace all the cables and hoses for ape hangers. You might try stretching and rerouting, but it's a serious comprimise in function. Here's what I would do.

Bars: Wild1 mini apes, $200. IMO, just about the most perfect ergonomic bar out there. Chrome plating is excellent and durable. The extra thickness looks better, and vibrates less. Because they are necked down in the middle, you don't need to replace the bar clamp or risers

Cables: Buy a set of used '06 Wide Glide cables and brake hoses. Lots of people switch to chrome and sell the stock parts on e-bay. The '06 parts are supposed to be a better low friction design.

Hand grips: Replace stock with whatever you like best. I prefer KA Iso Grips.

Wiring: Run internal wires. Looks a lot better.

Do the work yourself. It's not rocket science. The wiring can be a pain, but again, not rocket science.

I got 12's and a full set of braided brake lines. They did have to redo the wiring and it took a lot longer than expected. I also got the heated grips put on. I would much prefer to get the wiring run inside the bars if that's possible, as heaps of black wiring on the outside doesn't look so good.

I much prefer the bike with the apes and forwards. heaps better for a bigger rider. I'd say Phreak is probably right about the limit of how big you can go.

I did the street bob bars on my dyna, and didn't have to cut any wires. There is some extra length tucked into the frame. I just pulled some out. I bought the parts from Zanotti, and used all stock Harley parts. I think I got all of it for under $200.

So tarathatcher,

Bars look great on your bike.

I'd like to put Street Bob bars on my '06 FXDLI.

You had enough play in all the cables without changing them to do the switch?

The cables themselves I had to replace. I bought street bob cables. I can get you the part numbers I ordered if you like. I was pleasantly suprised that i didn't have to cut wires! Just put the bars on, and changed cables. Then I had to bleed the front brake. It wasn't too difficult.
