WOW MAN!!! that does look sick!!! they will not rust, I powdered the back sides of them... as long as every now and then he hits the covers with a coat of wax they will be fine, with no rust... it would be one thing if he ws a guy that did not keep a clean bike or detail it, but he does... so it is not an issue... like i said man, if you decide to clear them i will lay some clear powder down over them no problem, but it does dull it down a touch. with the powder on the back sides, as well as a strip powdered under the battery band he can easily access the whole cover to lay some wax down to protect it... looks awesome! I have polished countless parts for my builds and my brothers old sporty... NEVER had rust issues.... EVER.... but then again we do keep spotless bikes...
to polish them, i first stripped them, then started with 400 grit up to 2000 going in the same direction the whole time... from there i turned to the buffing wheels and went from course polish up to an ultra fine on a micro wheel again making sure to go in the same direction, I lube wiht WD40 to keep from burning the polish on the metal and scuffing... all in all it is only about a 500 step process but the results speak for themselves... looks awesome man, it is an honor to have some of my handy work on your scoot. looks awesome!
