Bought mine in December of 07 and as off today have just over 20,000 miles. I use it for commuting and obviously lots of rides that have gone up to 10 hrs straight (minus fuel/food). I have done countless miles on all types of roads and when on the freeways I'm probably between 70 and 85 mph. I bought the windshield when I bought the bike and I've had it on twice maybe three times. I put it on the first day just to try it out....works great but I just like it off. The wind never bothers me and I just don't feel as if I'm getting pushed to the point of wishing I had it on. The other time was a trip we thought might run into some bad weather......no bad weather and I was pissed that I had it; well at least bummed anyways. Planning on going cross country in May so I'll need it then I guess but someone is towing a trailer so at least I can ditch it when I want.

Just so you know here in case I wasn't clear, the point of this little story is I personally don't think you need it but it is good to have if you are going to ride in wet weather.

I like no shield for the look of the bike (Looks much better with no shield) but use a shield 99% of the time because of not only weather but BUGS!!! I do mainly highway riding during the TOO BRIEF riding season here in NH and having a big bug hit you in the face at 80 MPH can literally KILL you! I NH we don't need to wear helmets but I do anyway ... however it's open faced. I'd rather have an open faced helmet and a shield then no shield and a full helmet.
