Default Dealer BS?

I've been riding for 20 years but I bought my first HD (09 SB) a month ago. The last thing the salesman told me before I drove off was "When you come back for you 1000 mile service don't be surprised if there are metal shavings in the oil. That's normal." Is that right? Sounds like crap, but I was wondering if anyone else has ever been told that.

Thanks.

Jim

Yes, there will be some metal shavings in the oil at the 1000 mile service. Same for the trans oil.

That's why the drain plugs have little magnets in them. It's normal, there is not much.

You will have some metal from the breakin but not shavings it's more like powdered metal. Mine had very little on the drain plug.

Ya, thats part of the break in. That's why they tell you not to go hard on it for first 500 miles, not to go into 6th and so forth.

But it's not like metal chunks, as mentioned above, it's more like minute powder, and that's why you do the service so quickly.

when I drained my primary at 1,000 miles it had lots of metal flake in it. Didn't notice as much from the trans and engine but trans had a little bit.

Huh? Not go into 6th? Wasn't told that, and owners manual doesn't mention that either. Tables 19 and 20 just talk about up and down shift speeds on the very very cautious side and do cover going into and out of 6th during break in.
