I haven't tried Thermo-Tec, but I noticed no real difference between DEI and the Summit brand wrap I bought. As others have said, buy wrap not specifically advertised for a motorcycle. For what ever reason they jack the price up when they say its for motorcycle pipes. I safety wire both ends of the wrap instead of using clamps as I think it looks cleaner.

I have never had an issue with it cutting the wrap. I use a double wrap of safety wire and make sure to use stainless safety wire and not some cheaper alternative. The pics below are of the start of my last wrap job and the tools I used. The pipes are black Bassani Pro Streets I got off Ebay for $150. I double wrapped the portion closest to the motor. You can see the safety wire at the end of the pipe. I wasn't worried about how it really looked, since it would be covered by the second layer of wrap.

I wrapped both pipes starting at the header and moving towards the muffler. As mudpuddle will also testify, if you wrap tightly, there is no need for a clamp at the starting end. You can start at the muffler end or the header end, but if you wrap it correctly, the tension of the wrap will hold the start point in place...then just clamp the finished end. Hope this makes sense.
