My lights are on bright during the day...and I'd say 7-8 months for bulbs ain't bad.

My original bulb was about 2 1/2 years and 34K miles. It burned out on a trip so I got a set of those super bright bulbs. Since they came in a set of two my riding buddy and I both put then in. It lasted about 4 months and 6K miles within a week and within a few miles my buddies' headlight did exactly the same thing.
I also had a lot of problems with oncoming traffic flashing their brights at me at night even though I was on low beam. If you are blinding oncoming drivers you may be putting yourself at risk despite the additional safety you get from visibility. I went with the Harley dual bulb headlight (not the HID) and I really liked it. It gave a wider path so I could see the ditches better and the high beam seemed to light further down the road but I wasn't constantly getting flashed by other cars.
Now I have the Road Glide and it has the best headlights of anything I have ever ridden at night.
