Default Forward controls

Greetings fellow enthusiasts,

I am the proud owner of a 06 FXD35. I have questions. I am entertaining the idea of installing forward controls. Has any body on this forum done the forward control instalation them selves?. If so, did you need any special tools?.I plan on doing this my self and would like any helpful hints.

Thanks for any info

The big torx bit is a #45. Best to get it in a 3/8" drive socket.

This came up before. To do the job "right" is a real pain in the neck. The problem is that the shifter shaft extends all the way through the inner and outer primary. And there is no inspection cover any more. The inner shift arm is welded to the shaft. To remove the shifter shaft, you have to remove the inner primary. Which requires removal of the clutch, alternator, etc, etc, etc. It's a real pain.

BUT, there is an easy way out of it. Go to the hardware store and get a chrome cover for the shaft, and silicone it in place. Then make a small bracket to bolt the inside end of the shifter arm to something else. There's a handy stud/nut only and inch or two away. Now the install only takes 1 hour, instead of 4.

Not my idea, I copied from someone else.

I purchased the kit from H-D and the shifter arm which attaches to the tranny is longer and has a slight bend in it, if you don't replace this I am unsure if you might expierence some binding or interference, otherwise why would they include it, I opted for the dealer to install and maintain my warrenty, a total of 600.00.

Must be something different on the 06 compared to the 05 because I installed mine myself and it was easy as 1 2 3 done! and the controls were only 300 bucks.
