Simple post regarding Tach opinions
I've been looking at the tach kits for my Bob and thinkin that they are dang expensive. Maybe it ain't worth it. Any of you guys installed a tach on your tachless bikes? Anybody think it's worth the trouble. I can see riding without one, but would like the peace of mind to know I'm not always running 500 or so revs to high.

Well,. ..I do agree they are pretty pricey, But I decided to go with a dual speedo and tach chrome mount setup for my FXDI. Mostly because I was going to replace the black wrinkle speedo cover mount on my bike anyway and just decided to go ahead and add the tach while I was doing that. I tell ya what is sad, is that I already have appx $2,000 worth of chrome parts and stuff ordered with my dealer, for when my bike finally gets here, and that don't even include the V&H Big Radius, PCIII, and A/C, that I have ordered online.

Rocket Man,
The 2in compact Tach from H-D retails for $174.95 and the chrome billet dual gauge mounting system bracket for $88.95. The best part about this tach is that you dont have to do any cut and splicing,... its pretty much just plug and go.

I put the dual guage set up on my 05 FXDI and dont really pay any attention to it until I hit the rev limiter or I might glance at it when I'm cruising to see what the rpm is. I pretty much go by the sound of the motor now.

RE: Simple post regarding Tach opinions
The cost for a tach and mount is definitely a bit steep. But motorcycles should have tachs in my opinion so it was the first thing I added to my Sportster and also the first thing I added to my Street Bob. I did a lot of research before I came up with a setup I liked. I'm sorry I don't have a better picture, but the bike is finally in for its recall service so I can't snap some better pictures right now.
This is NOT a simple plug-in installation on a Street Bob. There is no documented tach signal on these bikes. Prior speedometers had a signal to a tach on pin #3 I think, but the speedo on the Bob does not produce a signal there. Pin #3 on the ECU however DOES provide a suitable tach signal despite being unlabelled in the service manual.
I originally took some wiring shortcuts, but I did a project write-up primarily to document the tach signal part. Step 1 gives all relevant part numbers. I have since rerouted the power, ground, and signal wires under the tank and I just haven't updated the project. Hopefully this will still give you an idea of what you need to do to get a signal.
