fifth to sixth - 60-65 MPH
Remember that lawyers are involved with writing the manual and they know that the speed limit in many places are 65mph tops. So, to cover their asses, they aren't going to tell you to shift into sixth at or above the speed limit.

+1 on this - the manual is being extremely "conservative" for the points mentioned. I couldn't even imagine shifting into 6th under 100kph (approx 63 mph)...usually dont do it till about 110 (just under 70mph). Less than about 60 mph the bike will chug along fine on the flats but will definitely lug under hard acceleration ur up a long grade.

Ayebyte you are right on target with the lawyers. Bottom line is if I shift into 6th gear at 55 mph I'm lugging the hell out of my bike. My owners manual says the same as yours but its not riding the bike.

haha well no ****. If you want to accelerate hard or need to go up a steep grade then shift down. Ain't that hard. 60 mph in 6th is just fine for the bike as long as you aren't doing what you just said.

I hardly ever use 6th gear unless I am on the interstate at 70mph. 60mph in 5th gear feels smooth an where the motor likes to run on my bike. I do not have a tach so just run whatever gear feels smooth an not worry about shift points.

When I picked my bike up from the dealer they told me not to shift to 6th unless over 70 MPH. Thats just what they told me. Do what feels good.

What happens if you get into a situation where you dont have time to down shift and need the go go juice right now?

I always like to be in the powerband while riding....

Well gents, I took my bike out tonight and shifted as recommended by the forum. I shifted the top 3 gears on average driving 15 miles an hour faster then I have been. No 6th gear until 65 or 70 MPH and I saw the difference. The bike seemed to be "happier" shifting later. I would imagine it will burn more gas BUT it definitely performed better and seemed smoother.

Thanks for the guidance.

Default Here's a rule of thumb

...having a tach is nice because it makes things simple; if you are an experienced rider your ear will tell you when to shift.

...I never ride at less than 2000 rpm's (thats lugging...bad for the motor)...changing gears at anywhere between 2000 and 5500 rpm's is no problem.

my point is...speed is not an issue when it comes to changing gears, its all about rpm's.

It only takes a second to shift down.
