Default Black vs. Grey Powder Coat - Cost?

Does anyone know, FOR A FACT, that there is more cost involved in powder coating the Harley engines in black vs. grey? And if there is, why? I'm not trying to start a black vs. grey war here, I'm just curious. I've seen it said several times that the FXD, FXDC, and now the 09 FXDB's are cheaper because they don't have the black engine. I have always assumed powder coat is powder coat and color should make little or no difference. Is there something about the black that makes it more expensive? If it is more expensive, that would at least answer some questions in my mind about how they justify the extra bucks for the dyna bikes that do have the black motors since I can't see enough other things to justify the added cost.

I'm hoping to get answers from people that KNOW and know WHY, not just theories. Thanks.

It doesn't make any sense to me. I'm always sending stuff out to powder for work and we get charged the same for any color.

i do not know how HD does it... but when you are poweder coating, powder is powder... prep is pretty much the same no matter what color you shoot... granted with candies and metal based powder, you have a bit diff stuff you can do but for the most part... NO nothing diff between using the black or the gray

Black costs more because people are willing to pay more for it.

I've got a feeling that's exactly what the deal is.

Is the gray really a powder coat or is that the natural color, that is the only way I see it makes sense. When I was at the dealership Saturday I overheard a salesman tell someone that.

I've always thought the gray motor was just the bare alluminum.
Black motors look cool, and as we all know..... Looks cool costs money!
