Default Higher elevation equals better mileage

My father in law and I went on an overnight camping trip this last weekend and spent most of Saturday in pretty high elevations, around 8000 feet. This last tank got me 209.7 miles and took only 4.274 gallons to refill. That is 49.06 mpg! I've never gotten that good down here in the valley!

I cant argue with it, I live at 7500 and get 50 if I drive right.&nbsp\\; But it makes no sence to me higher elevation means less air and means richer setting (i have a carb) meaning more gas.

Or maybe less oxygen is making you guys dizzy and impeding your math skills.

ya that does seem counter-intuitive doesn't it? at a higher altitude the air is less dense so you get less o2 with the same amount of fuel which means you are running rich therefore your fuel mileage should go down. I wonder if it could be a case of more downhill than uphill? But how much mroe would there have to be to make a noticable difference. Interesting.

Yeah, that's why I posted this... to see what anyone else had to say. Down here in the valley, I get a consistent 42mpg. Up there, almost 50 and packed pretty heavy. I filled up in Bear Valley (bout 6000ft), climbed up Ebbets Pass (9000ft), came around hwy 89 to hwy 88, stayed in Hope Valley (8000ft) then back home. At least 100 of the 200 miles were uphill, packed heavy. Go figure!
