someone correct me if i am wrong but in order to get a DOT rating it requires to have a certain amount of padding as well as a certain thickness of the shell which give you the mushroom look.

I've got a couple of Jafrum 1/2 shells for the Mrs. and I. They're DOT and liners are 3/4" thick and fit pretty slim, cheap too. Its not as thin or as light as one of the Carbon Fiber jobs but its not 3 times the price either (CF helmets start at $175)www.jafrum.com . Looked at others by Bell, HJC, Shoei etc. and all 1"-1.5" liner and sits tall on your head. www.dyatonahelmets.com also have a nice slim fit helmet, I'm getting ready to try one of their 3/4 myself.

I bought mine from advanced carbon and they use 5/8 foam instead of 1 inch and I still look like a Q-TIP

Actually, I think the mushroom look IS a DOT requirement

+1 for&nbsp\\; Carbon Fiber Helmets, I will never buy any other half helmet anywhere else.&nbsp\\; Thin, light, durable, all around high quality.&nbsp\\; They come with different thickness foam inserts so you can adjust the fit for your head too.&nbsp\\; They don't fit quite as snug as the mushroom helmets but when fitted properly the lift at highway speeds is about the same.&nbsp\\; IMO well worth the money.

FYI to our military folks they give a discount too.

Go to your local wal-mart (I hate them) in they're craft dept. and get the silver letters and make yur own "DOT" sticker. That's what I did and it turned out great.
