I'm wondering whether it might be possible to do a sheet metal exchange for one of the 2009-style fenders.

Just to keep it simple you can cut it straight across just above the license plate mounting holes.Take some tape,duct tape, across from the ends of the fender rails across the top of the plate mount and cut.

Has anybody done this with a vivid black fender? What'd it cost to get touched up or repainted?

I cut mine this weekend. I'm not painting it until this winter so I wanted a CLEAN cut. It was suggested that I use a jigsaw with a good blade and it worked great. VERY clean cut and almost can't tell its not painted at the cut point.
