Azgunner - no timing adjustment. I always run 91-93. Good point on punching it - normally only does it when I am really winding it out in 4th or 5th and it's hot.
Good troubleshooting hints all, appreciate it. Wondering if detonation is because of extreme heat and if stock main jet, a lean condition. NEVER detonates at any speed if the temps are cooler.
Since the only time its happening is when its very hot out, I would tend to think its running a little lean. \\; I would try richening it up a bit and see how it reacts. \\; As was pointed out, carb adjustments are a happy medium.

This is for the Chicago area, temps typically 80's \\; although sometimes the low 90's
